Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion.
In this painting, we can see all of Pietro Barbieri's pictorial flair, even in such a minimal representation. The pictorial tools are essential, yet the artist has created an image of great expressive impact. The subject appears completely diaphanous, like a vague apparition in a foggy atmosphere. All this is possible thanks to Pietro Barbieri's extraordinary technique, which manages to convey the image of the woman and child with an intense pictorial vibration. The touch is extremely light and allows the subject to emerge with great grace and refinement.
Pietro Barbieri was born in Venice in 1940. He has held approximately 130 solo exhibitions, 60 altarpieces in various churches and places of worship, and paintings in several museums. He has illustrated books and magazines and painted frescoes abroad (France, Portugal, Croatia, and Germany). Pietro Barbieri's work has been published seven times and two documentaries have been filmed, marking his fifty-year career.
