Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Age, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation only starting in the 19th century. This type of subject coherently reflects the inclinations of the painter Rino Contini, whose artistic career is closely linked to Impressionism. Urban landscapes and scenes of city life are, in fact, typical themes of that pictorial movement, whose language is well suited to depicting the city of Venice with its interplay of reflections and refractions of light. It is worth remembering that immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the modern aspects represented by the urban landscape: the frenzy of the city, the crowds, the traffic, and the typically bourgeois settings. Throughout his career, the artist Rino Contini has drawn upon this aesthetic, even in the stylistic register he adopted.
The style developed by Rino Contini in his works highlights a post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is entirely compressed into the foreground, without allowing any spatial depth. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the view, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstrokes, rich in texture, intervene, which, despite the essentiality of the representation, flesh out the objects, breaking them down into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life within them.
Rino Contini is a renowned Venetian painter who has placed the lagoon city at the center of his work. His interpretation of Venice is based on an exuberant, post-Impressionist-inspired style that allows him to play with the reflections and refractions from the water's surface.
