Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is an artist's copy of Domenichino's Cumaean Sibyl. The Sibyl is depicted according to an unusual iconography, as the subject is usually depicted without the musical attributes present in this painting. The world of music, with which the artist was well acquainted, is referenced both by the scroll with the notes and by the neck of the viola, the instrument used to accompany the song that seems to come from the prophetess's half-open mouth. The vine plant painted behind the sibyl and the laurel, a tree sacred to Apollo, god of music and the arts, also reference the same sphere.
A beautiful reproduction from Domenichino, from which we can appreciate the more classicist side of the painter from Bologna. Like other artists from the Bologna area close to the Carracci school (Guido Reni, Lanfranco, Guercino), Domenichino always struggled between a more balanced, classicist language and a more Baroque temperament. In this work, given the solitary subject, classicism prevails. It is undoubtedly a product of the great naturalism of the seventeenth century, which, aiming to repair the supposed errors of Mannerism, drew directly from the great masters of the late Renaissance, Raphael in particular. Hence the monumentality of the figure, with its rounded forms that undoubtedly also have something to do with Titian. A completely naturalistic rendering, therefore, that is also expressed in a restrained atmosphere. The Sibyl, in fact, interacts with the space in a balanced manner, with a light sfumato that renders her contours undefined and her flesh soft to the touch. Even the few landscape elements fade naturally into the distance, creating a harmonious blend of tones. The light strikes the subject from the right, creating shadows with perfect verisimilitude and illuminating the complex drapery, characterized by an almost sculptural plasticity. The color palette, with a predominance of dark hues, is typically 17th-century.
The anonymous artist behind this work, taken from Domenichino, demonstrates a mastery of high-quality painting. This mastery is expressed through an absolutely naturalistic rendering, requiring a refined technique of glazing. In this way, the artist achieves the indefiniteness of contours, the continuity between subject and space, which are fundamental prerequisites of classicism in modern painting. The entire surface of the canvas is harmoniously unified by an atmosphere in which the predominance of dark tones is in keeping with the seventeenth-century aesthetic.
