John Constable (from) - The Mill Stream

The work reproduced here is a painting by John Constable, a prominent artist of the English Romantic movement. The painting depicts a landscape scene with an almost wild woodland setting. The painting unfolds on multiple levels; in the foreground, a figure stands atop a low wall with a fishing rod. On the left, a small boat navigates the river. The work before us is a mechanical print based on a work by John Constable, entitled "The Mill Stream - Willy Lott's House," now owned by the Ipswich Borough Council Collection. Typical of Constable, nature is left untouched, without artificial embellishment. The result resembles a marvelous photographic snapshot that transports us back through the centuries.

John Constable was born in 1776 in East Bergholt. Along with William Turner, he is today considered one of the greatest landscape painters of English Romanticism. His father, a landowner, wanted to entrust the family business to John, but since he showed early talent for painting, his father was understanding and entrusted everything to his younger brother, supporting John during his training in London. He was one of the first to paint en plein air, allowing him to better analyze natural phenomena, which enhanced the charm of his paintings. He died of a heart attack in 1837.
