Description of the work
Description of the work
The work can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The work is inspired by the Rococo culture, of which Boucher was one of the greatest exponents, especially in terms of the theme rather than the style, which can be described as full naturalism. However, the abundance of details covering the entire surface of the work and the vaporous forms are typical of the Rococo style. Formally, the work focuses on the two figures arranged in a pyramidal pattern thanks to the expanse of the large and complex drapery. The two lovers are also linked by a very graceful reciprocity of movements that makes the work even more balanced.
The artist who created the painting was able to fully respect the original painting by Francois Boucher, thanks to his remarkable technique and certain academic training.
