Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
The work is based on a portrait painted by Giovanni Boldini in 1901. The composition has been slightly altered; while the original image is cropped just below the neck, the present work frames the woman's entire torso. In terms of execution, the painter adopts Boldini's typical formula of blending the two distinct stylistic registers of naturalism (in the treatment of the face and skin) and impressionism (in the clothing and surrounding space). Thus, in this painting too, the softness of the face contrasts with the syntheticism and cursive immediacy of the pictorial space.
The artist who created this painting, revisited by Giovanni Boldini, demonstrates a fine painting technique, especially in his interpretation of the rapid, synthetic brushstrokes that construct the figure and the space with which it interacts, embodying the spirit of the Ferrarese master's artistic language. Compared to the original, the interpretation of the facial complexion is harsher, though technically of a good standard.
