Description of the work
Description of the work
The work can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
This engraving by Corrado Cagli is another splendid example of how the Marche-born artist's artistic production drew inspiration from the art of the past, especially from the tradition of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Italian painting. In this case, the artist performs an almost philological operation, recreating a true sketch that seems to have emerged from the notebook of a Renaissance artist. The rapid, concise strokes seem to imitate sanguine, as do the lines that characterize the work's concrete plasticity. The sitter's natural and graceful pose creates a figure of great personality, typical of Corrado Cagli's work.
Corrado Cagli was born in Ancona in 1910 and died in Rome in 1976. His artistic training was divided between Rome, Paris, and New York. Throughout his career, he experimented with various artistic languages, ultimately arriving at a modern contextualization of 15th- and 16th-century art. His works are always characterized by geometric and abstract motifs, earning him the nickname "the Italian Picasso." He employed a variety of techniques, including unusual ones, such as encaustic and mosaic.
