Description of the work
Description of the work
The 1960s and 1970s saw the birth of various movements that investigated and stimulated visual perception, both through traditional painting and sculpture methods, but also through innovative mechanical means that allowed for serial reproduction or, in any case, graphic and pictorial techniques inspired by that type of production.
The starting point for Corrado Cagli's more geometric and abstract works is the exploration of pure forms that had been conducted since the avant-garde era. Think of Kandinsky's abstractions or Mondrian's Neoplasticism. With the introduction of mechanical means into the visual arts, this exploration was joined by an exploration of seriality in graphic art, also explored through the medium of painting. In Corrado Cagli's case, this leads to an interplay of lines and symmetries that gives rise to fascinating optical illusions of figures that develop in three-dimensionality. The reiteration of the graphic line seems to reproduce a face, subject to overlaps and duplications.
Corrado Cagli was born in Ancona in 1910 and died in Rome in 1976. His artistic training was divided between Rome, Paris, and New York. Throughout his career, he experimented with various artistic languages, ultimately arriving at a modern contextualization of 15th- and 16th-century art. His works are always characterized by geometric and abstract motifs, earning him the nickname "the Italian Picasso." He employed a variety of techniques, including unusual ones, such as encaustic and mosaic.
