Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

Athos Corticelli's works are entirely constructed through color. Using a remarkable Impressionist technique, Corticelli's color delineates forms with just a few brushstrokes, creating views brimming with vivacity and freshness. However, as we can see in this painting, which features a fairly recurring pattern in this artist's work (the diagonal compositional cut), Corticelli's ability to synthesize goes even beyond Impressionism, reaching a level of abstraction, determined precisely by his cursive brushstroke, that borders on Expressionism. The brushwork, at times dense and textured, also introduces a certain gestural component.

Athos Corticelli (Bologna 1911-1990) is an artist strongly influenced by Impressionism; a large part of his production consists of views or landscapes that are strongly inspired by that pictorial style, but recontextualized in a contemporary sensibility that introduces strong expressionist notes.
