Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s and encompassed all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks proposed the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely divorced from reality. Costantino Canonico's Surrealism emerged as a heterogeneous blend of elements, both abstract and figurative, in the creation of an original artistic language.
The work takes the viewer on a journey through the artist's perception, which is expressed on the canvas through a vortex of images and compositional themes. The surface of the work is completely occupied by the composition, featuring a myriad of themes and subjects born from the artist's creativity. Costantino Canonico largely entrusts his expressiveness to sign-like elements, sometimes sinuous, sometimes concentric, sometimes zigzagging. All this gives the work a frenetic pace, igniting a whirlwind and unstoppable movement. Within this dynamism, figurative images appear to provide references, subtle orientations in the journey the artist proposes to the viewer. Canonico is also exuberant in his technique, thanks to a loose and casual touch. Even in terms of color, the artist is consistent with the frenetic nature of the work, using aggressive, high-contrast hues.
Canonico was born in Rome in 1937, and lives and works in Trento. In 1980, he left his job to devote himself entirely to introspective painting of myth and symbol, connecting them with the modern world. From Jung, Hillman, and Umberto Galimberti. One of his works is housed at the Galleria Civica di Montagnana, Padua. Luigi Serravalli, Rinaldo Sandri, and Aldo Nardi, among others, have written about him.
