Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. The work in question represents a highly evocative view whose composition is based on the diagonal sweep of the arch of St. Peter's in Matera.
As we can see in this bas-relief, Costantini pursues a completely naturalistic rendering, which he achieves through his remarkable technique. The artist manages to emphasize the subject's volumes, creating a balanced relationship within the work. The details are highly precise, with a certain idealization. The plasticity is very pronounced in the architectural structures. The artist's sculptural technique is characterized by a pronounced use of color in the strong contrast between solids and voids, between light and dark. The figures thus appear truly concrete and create their own space within the work. The whole is constructed on orderly and rational lines, in an overall concept of harmony and balance of the parts.
