Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

When painter Costantino Condoianni moved away from the study of the human figure, feeling freer from the figurative constraints of plasticity, he further developed his expressionist streak, as we see in this beautiful landscape. The synthesis of the subject is taken to its extreme in an almost informal depiction of the small village. The buildings are delineated by a very nervous black line that follows oblique, sharp trajectories. Within this framework, the pictorial material is arranged, which again appears extremely complex, structural, and arranged on several overlapping dimensional planes. The tonal unity of this work, with its predominance of grays and browns, is also noteworthy.

Costantino Condoianni was an artist of Greek origin, born in Gravena in 1926 and died in Volo in 2000. He lived for many years in Tuscany, particularly in Prato, where he created many of his beloved "human figures" portrayed by friends from Prato. Costantino Condoianni's research, in fact, focuses on the human figure, in which the classical representation of the nude and the portrait takes on an original, formal, Expressionist guise.
