Description of the work
Description of the work
Controlling fire was one of the first great skills learned by humankind, and most likely the most useful in the struggle for survival of early hominids, as well as in the subsequent impact of modifying ecosystems and climate.
The importance of fire in the lives of ancient and more archaic civilizations seems the most reasonable explanation for the widespread myths surrounding its origins. The challenges of its preservation, its ability to spontaneously emerge, and its apparent life of its own may also explain its sacred place and the resulting fire cults. Fire is a key element in many rites of passage, celebrations, or festivals that mark the transition of an individual, a human community, or the world from one state to another. Fire was also one of the four elements in Greek philosophy and the alchemical tradition.
According to the most ancient myths, fire has divine, not human, origins. Therefore, humans must somehow have "stolen" fire from the gods.
In some religions there are specific deities closely linked to the cult of fire. In ancient Rome, the Vestal Virgins were responsible for guarding the perpetual flame within the temple, which guaranteed prosperity and survival to the city.[11] In the Bible, the analogy between fire and the spirit of God often recurs.
