Description of the work
Description of the work
The subjects of the great painter Antonio Ligabue are frequently inspired by the animal world, often captured in situations that reveal their wild and instinctive nature, characteristics mirroring the painter's own biography. For this reason, Ligabue loved to portray exotic animals (his tigers are famous), which the artist had rarely seen, especially through the occasional circus performance. These subjects, therefore, are interpreted primarily through the artist's imaginative reworking. A way to escape his reality, confined to the banks of the Po, and travel, through painting, to distant and exotic places. But even when Ligabue portrayed domestic animals, he tended to emphasize their feral nature, particularly cockfights and horses, which are always depicted in a state of frenzy or on the run.
In this tribute by artist Dan Bresu, we can appreciate how Antonio Ligabue can truly be considered, in the history of art, the greatest example of the concept of Naïve painting, both for his biographical story and for the translation of that story into an instinctive and highly original pictorial style. Marginalization, nervous breakdowns, and self-taught training led the artist to rework reality into infantile and primitive forms. But the artist's greatness lies in delineating an elaborate vision of the world even within that essential and instinctive representation. Indeed, in his simplification of reality, Ligabue simultaneously intuits its complexity. For this reason, the subject is synthesized in a two-dimensionally conceived space, but, at the same time, is constructed through a complex system of lines that takes into account both the volume and the dynamism of the depicted scene. This system of lines also moves across different planes, compensating for the two-dimensionality of space and recreating it on a conceptual level. The color tends to adhere to a naturalistic rendering but with excessively charged tones, attributable to the Naif poetics.
The silkscreen was created by Dan Breus, a renowned artist who reproduced famous works. His reproductions are always made using graphic techniques. His reproductions of Pablo Picasso's Guernica are particularly famous. Other artists Dan Breus has reproduced include Giorgio de Chirico and Andy Warhol.
