Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
This work is part of a figurative phase by artist Danila Di Ciolo, in which subjects are perceived as real, but the painter's interpretation transcends the sensory world, shifting the representation into a symbolic dimension. This is evident in the way the subject is depicted generically, stripped of individual features, to take on an iconic character. The representation thus transcends the contingent to take on broader meanings. Formally, a bold line identifies simple, clear volumes. The figure's plasticity is revealed objectively and concisely, with an exaltation of formal values that harks back to magical realism. The color is applied with a compact brush. Even the palette, full of primary colors, is consistent with the entire Symbolist aesthetic of this work. The artist favors muted tones that are a blend of Picasso's Blue and Rose periods.
Danila Di Ciolo is an artist who lives and works in Versilia, between Camaiore and Pietrasanta. Her works are held in collections in Australia and the Middle East. Danila Di Ciolo has a permanent exhibition at the Aretusa Gallery.
