Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The first fundamental element that emerges from an analysis of these paintings by Danilo Andreis is the rationality of the composition. Although the painter measures the space in perfect aerial perspective, applying the sfumato technique with remarkable skill, the landscape is nevertheless framed within a clear convergence of orthogonal lines. The objects are arranged on this convergence in an almost entirely symmetrical manner, creating a perfect harmony of the elements. From a formal standpoint, Andreis pursues an impeccable naturalistic rendering, based on a very marked drawing structure. The objects' volumes are plastically highlighted, and every detail is depicted with extreme precision. Regarding the atmosphere, the entire scene is characterized by a burnished or pale light, depending on the atmospheric conditions he wishes to depict.
Danilo Andreis was born in Vicenza and resides in Novara, where he has lived and worked for over thirty years. After several years of pursuing traditional figurative painting, he began painting in 1963, using a highly personal technique based on the study of atmospheric vibrations and the exploration of light, achieving a distinctive atmospheric quality. In his landscapes, Andreis captures the most poetic "fleeting moments," the harmonious rhythm of branches, the musicality of rustling leaves, creating a world of his own, dense with intense emotion.
