Description of the work
Description of the work
The work has a marked expressionist vocation, which tends to emphasize the expression of emotions. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of the figures, through a very nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent color palette. These characteristics are found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism: Fauvism and the Die Brucke movement in Germany.

This work is extremely interesting because it offers a glimpse of a different side of Dante Panni's artistic production. In this case, the artist distances himself from the pure aesthetic of mechanical drawing, instead embracing a highly instinctive representation, imbued with highly expressive gestures. Emblematic of this is the artist's use of chalk, through which he synthesizes the two subjects in a simple yet vibrant form. The reduction of descriptive details favors a highly expressionistic representation that focuses on the large eyes, which seem to open a door to a more introspective exploration.
Dante Panni was born in Senigallia in 1924. He trained at the Urbino Institute in 1954 and throughout his career participated in numerous exhibitions throughout Italy (Senigallia, Sassoferrato, San Marino, Ascoli, Reggio Emilia, Forlì, Venice, Rome, Ancona, San Benedetto del Tronto, La Spezia). He worked primarily as a graphic designer and illustrator, receiving important awards such as one from the "Centro Democratico di Cultura e Documentazione" in 1957 and one in Sassoferrato in 1961. Much of Dante Panni's artistic production draws on the prerogatives of mechanical reproduction, seeking an aesthetic based on pure lines and colors.
