Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. For the Livorno painters of the Livorno School, linked to the post-Impressionist and post-Macchiaioli traditions, landscape was a key subject, along with genre scenes depicting everyday and popular life.
The work highlights the artist Alvaro Danti's post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is entirely constructed through color, and the brushstrokes have a notable structural value. The painter's aim is not to capture the tangible details of the landscape, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstrokes, rich in texture, intervene, which, despite the essentiality of the representation, break down the space into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life on the subject. Thus, within an essentially two-dimensional surface, squashed into the foreground, the objects are constructed by the painter with broad, dense brushstrokes. Chromatically, moreover, the entire surface of the work is blended with a unifying palette.
Alvaro Danti was a Livorno painter born in 1911 and died in 1985. He devoted himself to painting from a young age, frequenting the studio of Cafiero Filippelli and demonstrating his loyalty to the Livorno tradition, placing a clear emphasis on color. In the late 1940s, Danti, painting from life in the company of several painters his age, began a careful study of landscape, which, characterized by a strong expressive imprint, became a pictorial pretext for a work of emotional introspection. In 1963, Danti was involved in two important exhibitions in the capital. First, he participated in the prestigious Quadriennale and then in the group exhibition "Eight Livorno Painters in Rome" organized by the Galleria D'Arte d'Urso. In these years, his exhibitions intensified, among which we remember Certaldo, Municipality of Certaldo 1963, Niagara Falls (Canada), Cagliari, Galleria Maestri del Colore, Pisa, Galleria Il Navicello 1970-1971-1974, Salsomaggiore, Accademia d'Italia 1983.
