Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s and encompassed all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks proposed the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely divorced from reality. Dario De Blank's Surrealism emerged as a heterogeneous blend of elements, both abstract and figurative, in the creation of an original artistic language.
The work takes the viewer on a journey through the artist's perception, which is expressed on the canvas through a vortex of compositional, biomorphic, and fantastical images and themes. The surface of the work is completely occupied by the composition, featuring a myriad of themes and subjects inspired by the artist's creativity. All this gives the work a frenetic pace, igniting a whirlwind of unstoppable movement. Within this dynamism, figurative images appear to provide references, subtle orientations in the journey the artist proposes to the viewer. The figures are subjected to expressive deformations. De Blank is also exuberant in his technique, thanks to a loose and casual touch. Even in terms of color, the artist is consistent with the frenetic nature of the work, using aggressive, high-contrast hues.
Dario de Blanck y Menocal (Milan, 1944 – Rome, 2013) was an Italian painter and sculptor. He was introduced to painting as a child by Winston Churchill, who frequented the De Blanck family. He developed his painting experience by becoming a student of Marc Chagall and associating with Giorgio de Chirico, who described him as "an archaeologist of the depths of the unconscious." His first solo exhibition took place in 1969 at the "Bonni e Schubert" Gallery in Lugano. One of his large canvases on the theme of human rights is exhibited at the UN Headquarters in New York. His works are included in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Museum of Western Modern Art in Moscow, the Petit Palais in Geneva, and the Musée d'Art in Paris.
