Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is an excellent copy of the very famous painting by Jacques-Louis David, "Napoleon Crossing the Great St. Bernard", created between 1800 and 1803 and preserved at the National Museum of the Château de Malmaison.
The work is extremely interesting in the context of the propaganda and mythologization of Napoleon by one of the most important exponents of neoclassical painting. The leader is depicted as a classical hero, in an idealized pose expressing all his heroism and grandeur. Formally, the artist who created the copy respects the character of David's neoclassical style, imitating the sculptural forms typical of his paintings.
Jacques-Louis David (Paris, August 30, 1748 – Brussels, December 29, 1825) was a French painter and politician. After a traditional education, still influenced by the Rococo style, Jacques-Louis David won the coveted Prix de Rome, which allowed him to travel to Italy in 1775. His five-year stay in Rome was a tormented and difficult period for him, unsatisfying creatively yet rich in fundamental experiences, such as the direct study of classical art, the discovery of Renaissance art (Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael) and Baroque art (Caravaggio), and, likely, exposure to the writings of Winckelmann, Mengs, and other theorists of Neoclassicism, of which David became the leader in France. Politically active in the Jacobin Club and a friend of Robespierre, he later became a supporter of Napoleon and his official painter.
