Description of the work
Description of the work
Since the 19th century, when painting began to explore various aspects of bourgeois life, the circus world has been a theme explored by various artists. With the development of Symbolist and Expressionist movements between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the figure of the acrobat, circus performer, or mask began to gain popularity, as it played a key role in the development of complex iconographies with hidden and mysterious meanings. Examples include the figures of artists and harlequins immortalized by Picasso during his "blue" and "rose" periods. During the 1970s and 1980s, it became a true genre, practiced by many painters, who focused their interest primarily on the figure of the clown.
In this work by artist Dayana Barretti, we can see how she is influenced by Cubism, not only in the subject matter (the circus performer is a typical theme of that movement) but also in the language used. Indeed, the figure of the little clown is subjected to a geometric reconstruction that breaks it down into regular shapes that constitute equal chromatic zones. The Cubist decomposition is even more evident in the construction of the work's space, based on a multiplicity of perspectives and viewpoints that render it highly complex. However, compared to the cold mechanicalness of Cubism, Dayana Barretti seems to favor a more human and empathetic type of representation. This can be seen in the intense face of the little clown, made more expressive by a marked process of abstraction. Furthermore, Dayana Barretti's painting is intensely painterly, almost gestural, and her palette is based on an enveloping, warm tonality.
As we can see from the analysis of this work, the artist Dayana Barretti is the protagonist of an original pictorial production in which she has made her own and reworked the instances of Cubism and Expressionism.
