Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
The work fully embraces an informal aesthetic and was composed entirely through pronounced pictorial gestures. The artist's gesture is expressed through different brushstrokes, which, combined on the paper, create a composition that, while expressionist and abstract, maintains a balanced composition. On the white paper, the main structure is constructed with broad brushstrokes, intersecting horizontally and vertically. Over this base, the artist proceeds with a more calligraphic style, consisting of light smears and drips of paint, which create connections or paths across the work's surface. The light structure is also maintained in the color choices, which lean toward shades between pink and light gray.
Artist De Berenger stands out for his highly experimental stylistic language, rooted in an informal poetics. His painting is essentially gestural and draws on typical American Abstract Expressionist practices such as drip painting.
