Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Island of San Giorgio" series is a subject Giorgio De Chirico developed, inspired by a Venetian view. This type of iconography addresses a crucial concept in De Chirico's poetics, also fundamental to the development of his metaphysical theses: the concept of a "return to origins." For De Chirico, contemporary art should not create new images; rather, the artist should select them from the past, as if it were an ideal museum, arrogating to himself the freedom to rework them into creative compositions.
In this silkscreen, compared to De Chirico's easel work, we can see a different nature in the artist. One of the fundamental concepts of Metaphysical Art is the production of images in an objectifying, completely illusory manner. In this silkscreen, however, we see a more instinctive De Chirico in his drawing and color. It's a composition dominated by a rapid, lively stroke, as is the dynamic application of color, characterized by a lively pictorialism. The intention is to renew and recontextualize a conventional image like that of the Venetian view.
Giorgio De Chirico, born in Volos, Greece, in 1888, died in Rome in 1978. He is the founder of Metaphysical painting. De Chirico reclaims images that already exist, familiar to the collective imagination. But he creates an effect of estrangement through the process of displacement—the sudden appearance of an object outside its usual context—or condensation, the fusion of multiple objects into a single entity. Metaphysical painting is also characterized by the illusory nature of its images.
