Description of the work
Description of the work
The plate is part of a series of Deruta majolica pieces whose subject matter is inspired by Roman history. Specifically, this ceramic depicts the legendary episode of Mucius Scaevola. During the Etruscan siege of Rome, Scaevola was tasked with killing their king, Porsenna. When the mission failed, he punished his hand by burning it in the fire.

The plate perfectly reflects the aesthetics and characteristics that have made Deruta majolica famous throughout the centuries. The subject is developed through an extremely refined design that, with its abundance of narrative and landscape details, transforms everything into a captivating, idealizing patina. The composition is also flawless, constructed entirely on an impeccable perspective grid. From a formal standpoint, the graphic design that constructs the subjects is excellent, and above all, the application of color is extraordinary, with an extremely soft touch that creates subtle shadows and shading. From a chromatic standpoint, the Deruta tradition is fully respected, with the prevalence of precious blue alternating with orange tending towards gold.
The work is a beautiful example of Deruta majolica, named after the Umbrian town where one of Italy's most important ceramic schools was founded as early as 1227. The production of Deruta majolica, which became widespread in the Middle Ages, has continued over the centuries, renewing its figurative tradition inspired by historical, mythological, religious themes, and official portraiture. Its distinctiveness, which makes it unique worldwide, lies in the refinement of the representations and the exquisite chromatic effects based on the use of manganese and copper green, blue, orange, yellow, and red.
