Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory aspect.
In this still life, Dina Bellotti's style is characterized by the development of a strongly expressionist language. The artist seeks to go beyond what is perceived by the senses to extrapolate the true essence of reality and convey it on the canvas in a lively and dramatic manner. For this reason, through the application of color, she develops a highly synthesised process that reduces the subjects to dense, material layers of paint, in which the painter's own emotion is also a key feature, conveyed through her agitated gestures. All these elements together constitute the expressionistic power of Dina Bellotti's painting.
Bernardina Bianca Bellotti, known as Dina Bellotti (Alessandria, 1912 – Rome, 2003), spent her childhood in her hometown, where she attended primary and secondary school. She demonstrated an aptitude for drawing early on, and in 1929 she enrolled at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin. She made her debut in 1935 in group and national exhibitions, and that same year, she won the gold medal for etchings at the Premio della Regina. In 1938, she exhibited her work for the first time at the Venice Biennale, a show she would return to twice more in 1940 and 1942. Dina Bellotti became known as "the painter of the popes." Beginning in the first half of the 1970s, she created several portraits of Paul VI and, later, John Paul II, which are preserved in the Vatican and used as official images of the pontiffs. Some of his works are exhibited in the Collection of Modern Religious Art inaugurated in 1973 by Paul VI.
