Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. Artist Dina Masnata Spasciani's work focuses precisely on genre scenes. Her subjects are inspired by a delicate lyricism of everyday life, in the depiction of scenes of country life.
Dina Masnata Spasciani's genre scenes and landscapes are always interpreted with a delightful, didactic realism. The compositions are highly detailed and rich in details, piquing the viewer's curiosity. The style is almost an illustration, in which the composition is carefully crafted to enhance the narrative development and, formally, the entire structure rests on the drawing. In this way, Dina Masnata, through the essentiality of her representations, manages to highlight the lyricism of simple lives, imbued with the primary values of family or rural life. However, the quality of engraving is not lacking, which Dina Masnata expresses with a rapid style of writing, lending greater immediacy and freshness to the representation.
Dina Masnata Spasciani was born in Cagliari in 1893. Her inspiration came from Felice Melis Marini, who at the time had opened an art school in Cagliari with Giovanni Battista Rossino. Working primarily in etching, her work focused on detailed depictions of Sardinian country life.
