Since the 19th century, when painting began to explore various aspects of bourgeois life, the circus world has been a theme explored by various artists. With the development of Symbolist and Expressionist movements between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the figure of the acrobat, circus performer, or mask began to gain popularity, as it played a key role in the development of complex iconographies with hidden and mysterious meanings. Examples include the figures of artists and harlequins immortalized by Picasso during his "blue" and "rose" periods. During the 1970s and 1980s, it became a true genre, practiced by many painters, who focused their interest primarily on the figure of the clown.

This painting is a prime example of the research of Dino Gaio, famous for his compositions of acrobatic clowns. The fundamental principle from which Dino Gaio begins is, first and foremost, a balance between the instinctive nature of a gestural technique and a narrative interpretation based on clear figuration. This creates a distinctive composition that is playful and curious in spirit, yet retains all the qualities of a pictorial work. In this tempera, Gaio further accentuates his concise and rapid pictorial style, creating a work on paper of great freshness of execution, in its originality.

Dino Gaio, born in Pesaro in April 1914 and died in Montelabbate in April 1989, was a musician and painter much loved by his students. Raised in an orphanage after the premature death of his parents, he began working as a ceramist at age 10, later graduating from art school. At 18, he resumed his music studies, attending the Pesaro Conservatory, graduating in clarinet. After the war and imprisonment, he devoted himself to teaching at the "Lettimi" music school in Rimini, then at the Pesaro Conservatory for 37 years. Alongside his teaching and concert activities, he continued to paint with growing success, exhibiting his works in many cities in Italy and abroad.
