Description of the work
Description of the work
The episode of the "Kiss of Judas" is very recurrent in the religious iconography of Western art. This is primarily because it is one of the central episodes of the Passion of Christ, and the moment of his arrest is one of the key scenes in the great fresco cycles that depict the Passion. However, the episode is so famous, as the supreme expression of the betrayal of divine majesty, that it is also beginning to appear in individual works, such as this one.
In this religious-themed work, Dino Migliorini, unlike his landscapes, adopts a markedly expressionist aesthetic. The artist therefore proposes a synthetic rendering of the image to accentuate its spiritual nature. The subject is outlined by a thick, dark, broken line. The image is entirely two-dimensional, and the color is applied flatly with compact areas of color.
Dino Migliorini was a painter originally from Rignano, where he was born in 1907 and passed away in 2005. He trained as an artist in Florence. Having moved to the Tuscan capital in 1924, he became an illustrator for the Nuovo Giornale newspaper and associated with Ardengo Soffici and Ottone Rosai. His first solo exhibition was also held in Florence. In the 1950s, his fame spread beyond the region and throughout Italy, with over 100 exhibitions, consistently acclaimed by critics and the public.
