Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings.
The painting is a perfect example of Dino Pelagatti's style. In his works, the artist achieves a synthesis of reality: space, first and foremost, is flattened and compressed. All the subjects adapt to this exercise of compression, losing volumetric substance and becoming elegant silhouettes. The artist accentuates the sinuous rhythm of these forms, underscoring them with quick black outlines. Within them, however, color predominates, spreading out in compact areas. Pelagatti's color is applied in pure hues, thus creating a delicate balance across the painting's surface.
Dino Pelagatti was a painter from Livorno, born in 1932 and passed away in 2016. His artistic practice was influenced by the post-Impressionist and post-Macchiaioli Livorno School. The artist then embarked on his own artistic journey, which led him to develop a personal artistic language based on line and color. Pelagatti's work marked the revival of the Livorno School in the late twentieth century. His favorite subjects were scenes of life by the sea, shipyards, fields, and city cafés.
