Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
This hand-colored lithograph is extremely interesting because it demonstrates how painter Dolores Puthod, who stands out for her expressionistic easel work, is capable of achieving the highest levels of naturalistic rendering in her study of the human figure. Indeed, in these two female figures, physiognomic verisimilitude reaches perfection, both in the facial features and the naturalness of their movements. Furthermore, formally, the two figures are rendered with an extremely dynamic graphic line which, in addition to describing the volumes with plastic clarity and identifying the shadows, gives the lithograph a remarkable freshness and immediacy of execution.
Dolores Puthod, born in Milan in 1934, is one of the leading figures of figurative painting of the last century. She graduated from the Brera Academy and worked as a set designer at La Scala in Milan. The artist has been painting and drawing for over 60 years, collaborating with Picasso, De Chirico, and Savino. Her works can be admired in major public and private collections and the most prestigious international museums. In 1997, she was a guest of honor at the first Florence Biennale, where she received the prestigious "Lorenzo il Magnifico" International Lifetime Achievement Award. A documentary film about her life and prolific artistic career, encompassing over 3,000 paintings, was released in 2014.
