Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
The aim of Domenico Seren Gay's painting is to offer a simplified interpretation of reality, seeking new values of purity in representation. For this reason, his painting style can be described as naïve, yet it expresses itself in a highly classical and traditional manner. His language, in fact, is essentially figurative and finds its broadest expression in the traditional genre of the flower vase. However, the artist manages to infuse tradition with his originality and personal touch, precisely through his pursuit of purity in representation that defines his style. Concretely, this is expressed in a fluid technique that resolves subjects with a few, quick but incisive strokes. The objects almost dematerialize in the lightness of the glazes.
Domenico Umberto Seren Gay (Turin, 1931 – 2003) was an Italian record producer, lyricist, composer, writer, actor, and painter. With his brother Giorgio Seren Gay, he founded Edizioni musicali Kansas, based in Turin's Galleria San Federico, and in 1965, initially collaborating with Miki Del Prete, they founded the Kansas record label. In the 1980s, he shed his musical influence and devoted himself increasingly to painting; a lithograph based on one of his works depicting Charlie Chaplin is housed at the National Cinema Museum in Turin, located in the Mole Antonelliana.
