Description of the work
Description of the work
The work was created using the Décollage technique, used by various artists since the 1950s, which involves layering posters or playbills, which are then gradually torn away. This technique is undoubtedly linked, first and foremost, to the poetics of the object, as it involves the use of discarded materials from consumer society. Another key component is Pop Art's interest in mass media. Finally, artistic gesture also comes into play, as the artist tears down the posters. Mimmo Rotella was a leading exponent of the Décollage technique. In this work, Domenico Villano also pays clear homage to Andy Warhol in his reworking of the quintessential Pop Art icon, Marilyn.
Domenico Villano draws directly from the aesthetics of Pop Art; indeed, the protagonists of his works are the icons of the 1950s that appear on posters. The poster itself, or rather, the object, is reconfigured by the artist through the act of tearing. This practice simply introduces the accidental nature of reality directly and suddenly into the artwork, giving it a new meaning. The tears, which mimic the ravages of time on the posters or the effects of weather, shift the work from an abstract dimension to the concrete dimension of existence. The artist further reconfigures the work through gestural painting, inspired by Abstract Expressionism and, more directly, by the Pop Art practiced by the Piazza del Popolo School. The symbolic presence of the neon sign also falls within the context of a Pop aesthetic, as even the quintessential media language, advertising, is transposed into a conceptual dimension through the artist's gesture.
Domenico Villano was born in Battipaglia in 1980. He developed his artistic career in Naples, drawing inspiration from the great masters of Pop Art, particularly Mimmo Rotella, from whom he borrowed the decollage technique. He has also worked as a set designer for RAI and Mediaset projects. He has exhibited his work in numerous exhibitions, including international ones (September 2015, Munich, Germany, Angelo Hotel Munich Leuchtenbergring; December 2015, Cava de Tirreni, Mediateca Marte; January 2016, São Paulo, Brazil, Golden Tulip Hotel Paulista; February 2016, Sanremo, Casa Sanremo, Palasanremo; June 2015, Naples, Mostra D'Oltremare).
