Description of the work
Description of the work
The work was created using the Décollage technique, used by various artists since the 1950s, which involves layering posters or flyers, which are then gradually torn away. This technique is undoubtedly linked primarily to the poetics of the object, as it involves the use of discarded materials from consumer society, but also to Pop Art's interest in mass media, as well as to an artistic gesture, as the artist tears down the posters.
Domenico Villano draws directly from the aesthetics of Pop Art. His works feature 1950s icons appearing on posters. The poster itself, or rather, the object, is reconfigured by the artist through the act of tearing. This practice simply introduces the accidental nature of reality directly and suddenly into the artwork, giving it a new meaning. The tears, which mimic the ravages of time or weather on the posters, shift the work from an abstract dimension to the concrete realm of existence. The artist further reconfigures the work through a symbolic or gestural approach, inspired by Abstract Expressionism and, more directly, by the Pop Art practiced by the School of Piazza del Popolo.
Domenico Villano was born in Battipaglia in 1980. He trained in the Neapolitan artistic environment, taking inspiration from the great masters of Pop Art, particularly Mimmo Rotella, from whom he took the decollage technique. He has also worked as a set designer for Rai and Mediaset projects. He has exhibited his works in numerous exhibitions, including international ones (September 2015 Munich, Germany, Angelo Hotel Munich Leuchtenbergring; December 2015 Cava de Tirreni, Mediateca Marte; January 2016 Sao Paulo, Brazil, Golden Tulip Hotel Paulista; February 2016 Sanremo, CasaSanremo Palasanremo; June 2015 Naples Mostra D'Oltremare).
