Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The subject reflects a typically eighteenth-century cultural climate inspired by a mythical Arcadian world and a fascination with ruins. This is further evidenced by the engraving's date, 1769, next to the artist's signature. Formally, the work exhibits all the hallmarks of a perfect illustration inspired by literary influences such as those of Arcadia. The work is exquisitely didactic in a precise and refined style. The space is rationally perspective-oriented, and the representation is meticulously detailed. Everything is rendered with delicate hatching, allowing the artist to create subtle chiaroscuro.
Duboij was an artist active in the eighteenth century. He created prints with profound literary influences inspired by a mythical pastoral world.
