Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
This engraving is an artist's study that provides a valuable testimony to D'Epifani's artistic language. The crowded scene is rendered using very simple media: a refined graphic line that follows a fast-paced, dynamic rhythm, and dense hatching that delineates shadows and hints at depth. D'Epifani's drawing style, on the one hand, summarizes the subject, as in Expressionism. On the other, however, he systematically analyzes it, leveraging a breakdown of planes and a multiplicity of viewpoints, as in Cubism.
As we can see from this engraving, D'Epifani's style blends abstract and figurative elements almost seamlessly. This painter's favorite subjects are the more traditional ones, genre scenes or the human figure, but everything is transfigured into an extremely experimental language, always striving for strong expressiveness.
