Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings.
A highly significant work by the Turin-born painter Edmondo Maneglia, it exemplifies his style. In this view, one can see how the artist uses a remarkably painterly approach that unravels the objects' forms, imbuing them with vibrations that are simultaneously atmospheric and existential. In this interpretation, color plays a decisive role, applied with thick brushstrokes that overlap to describe volumes and spaces. This painting's compositional scheme, which uses the building's lines to rationally divide the surface, is noteworthy.
Edmondo Maneglia was a Turin-based painter born in Koziu, Turkey, in 1925 and died in 2003. His favorite subjects were urban views and scenes of city life, as well as still lifes. His style is based on a Post-Impressionist style influenced by Cezanne, although at times it reached heights of Expressionism.
