The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
In this series of ink drawings, the artist LRE presents a fascinating aesthetic exploration balancing graphic design and informal aesthetics. Technically, the ten works are an extraordinary display of manual skill in tracing lines, creating extremely complex compositions that occupy the entire work. Curved, sinuous lines intertwine and intertwine with calligraphic expertise, constructing incredibly composite structures. It's as if the artist were embroidering the paper, creating a precious tapestry of drawings. Aesthetically, the informal approach proposed in these ten works seems to translate the artist's perception, sometimes into biomorphic concretions, in others into slender reticular structures. Yet each composition seems to conceal a hidden image within it, a natural element, a plant or a bird that the viewer must uncover in the tangle of signs created by LRE's skillful execution.
LRE was born in 1934. Her mother died at birth and she grew up in a boarding school. She married in Rome and raised four children. In 1983, she began her self-taught art journey. She expressed herself in an original way using a variety of techniques. "I paint my dreams," she loved to repeat, giving us images that open up new horizons. She participated in several group exhibitions in Rome, and in 2009, the Circolo Gardena in Ortisei (Bolzano) organized a solo exhibition for her entitled "Infinito." The embodiment of enthusiasm, a tireless artist, and the author of unpublished books, she passed away in 2019, bringing us beauty through her works and the example of her life.
