Animal depictions in art have ancient origins, even appearing in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true life portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. Fantuzzi's style lies midway between an expressionism that synthesizes figures, elegantly deforming them into elongated forms, and a certain tendency toward solitary and melancholic settings bordering on the metaphysical. Even in this work, in which the artist momentarily departs from his famous metropolitan settings, his expressionist language remains unchanged. The color palette generally favors cool tones of blue, green, and purple. Formally, the process of synthesis is further accentuated by a marked pictorialism in the construction of the image, which relies primarily on the application of color. Thus, the space tends to flatten, becoming two-dimensional, and the objects come to life in a vibrant and dynamic execution.

Eliano Fantuzzi was born in Modena in 1909 and passed away in 1989. He spent his childhood in Verona, where he moved with his family and attended the Cignaroli Art Academy. His experience in Paris, where he studied Impressionism and learned Expressionism instead, was crucial to his development. His nocturnal settings, dominated by shades of blue and purple, were also influenced by the Roman School. He participated in the Rome Quadrennial and the Venice Biennale.
