Elias Naman - Moonlight

It's difficult to convey the emotions and feelings that bind our lives into the cold, white marble of Carrara. This is the aim of sculptor Elias Naman, born in Yabroud, Syria, in 1980. After graduating from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus, he came to Italy in 2003 and enrolled at the Carrara Academy, where he earned a four-year degree in 2009 and a master's degree in sculpture with honors in 2011. He has participated in numerous sculpture symposia around the world and has exhibited his work in group and solo shows in Italy, France, Germany, Syria, Lebanon, Brazil, Argentina, and Taiwan.

He has always favored the figurative style and works the marble exclusively by hand, without the aid of machinery, exactly like Michelangelo over five hundred years ago.

His method of execution traces tradition and classicism: he works starting from the block of marble without the intermediation of a model or drawings. He currently works at his atelier, located in Via del Baluardo in Carrara.

For Elias Naman, marble is a living and sensitive substance. A voice to be listened to and transferred to the soul, to combine the spirit of classical antiquity with the deepest emotional impulses.

Indeed, whether he engraves and shapes the statuary white of Carrara or the grey of Bardiglio, symphonic delights emerge from his hands that combine the spirit of classicism with the emotional impulses aroused by the state of grace of every age. His is truly a "heroic activity" since even today he is not afraid to solicit with his gesture tried and tested memories of ancient draperies, only to then direct the continuation of the story not to the concreteness of a figure to be represented, but to the nostalgic escape of a dream to be pursued during an aerial evolution that ideally continues beyond the work.
