Elio Mazzella - Face of a Young Woman

Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

Elio Mazzella's artistic language, especially when he focuses on the female figure, seems to be a sort of mediation between tradition and avant-garde. Indeed, as we can see in this facial study, the subject's forms are full and rounded with a monumental plasticity that seems to hark back to a classical language. However, Elio Mazzella's interpretation of classical and Renaissance tradition is original and responds to contemporary aesthetic demands. Indeed, the rendering of the face is not detailed but reflects a certain process of abstraction that imbues the figure with symbolic and expressive values ​​that transcend the sensory. Formally, too, the artist employs a complex pictorial layering that almost seems to erode the forms.

Elio Mazzella was born in Naples in 1938, the city where he lives and works. Initially intent on studying law, he quickly felt the call of art, drawn by his father's sculptor studio. From his very first efforts, Elio Mazzella found favor with critics, especially Armando Dabundo, who encouraged his entry into the art world. From that moment on, numerous solo and group exhibitions followed, both in Italy and abroad. In 2010, he was included in the select group of artists who founded the Museo del Novecento at Castel Sant'Elmo in Naples. In 2011, he participated in the 54th Venice Biennale.
