Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
Elio Pulli is an artist who constructs his compositions by relying on the tonal and expressive values of color. He typically outlines objects with broad brushstrokes, synthesizing forms with a rather extreme expressionist approach. Thus, the image is reduced to the essential, expressed only by the color values and the application of brushstrokes on different structural planes to create a more complex surface. The chromatic unity and coherence are extraordinary, so much so that the subject appears to merge with the space in which it interacts. Brown tones prevail, interspersed here and there with sudden flashes of light.
Elio Pulli is a painter from Alghero born in 1934. His career began at a young age, receiving his first recognition at just eighteen. In 1955, one of Pulli's paintings was exhibited in Rome in a group show with Guttuso, De Chirico, Fausto Pirandello, and Mafai. From then on, several important exhibitions followed throughout Italy (in 1953, 1954, and 1955 in Sassari; in 1969 in Cagliari; in 1991 again in Sassari; in 1995 in Milan; in 1996 in Todi; and in 2001 in Florence and Pisa). In 2001, the municipality of Sassari dedicated a retrospective to him.
