Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The artist Elvino Montagna drew inspiration primarily from popular genre scenes.
Elvino Montagna's style is consistent across all the subjects he draws inspiration from, whether landscapes, vases of flowers, or scenes from the rural world. This consistency is expressed in an exquisitely realistic interpretation of objects, in which we can discern a poetics of simple, everyday things. The painter thus seeks beauty precisely in the details he delights in depicting. Formally, however, this does not translate into pure objectivity but into a heightened pictorialism that synthesizes sensory information in a flowing manner, lending freshness to the composition. For this reason, we can ultimately consider Elvino Montagna an artist endowed with post-Impressionist maturity. His compositions are all constructed through color, and his brushstrokes have a notable structural value. The painter's aim is not to convey the sensory aspect of his subjects, but to capture their very essence, their substance. To this end, the brushstroke, rich in material, intervenes, which, despite the immediacy of the representation, breaks down the space on different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life on the subjects.
Elvino Montagna was an artist born in Oderzo in 1880 and died in Padua in 1976. Throughout his career, he focused primarily on still lifes, landscapes, and scenes inspired by peasant labor. He interpreted his subjects with a vibrant realism. His rapid, flowing painting style displays a certain post-impressionist tendency.
