Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes were prevalent in artistic production (that is, until the 19th century when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). The iconography of the Madonna and Child is one of Elvio Marchionni's favorite subjects in his Renaissance citations.
In this retouched version of his famous "Strappi," Elvio Marchionni favors a composition still inspired by the Italian Renaissance, but with a more markedly classicist bent. The artist implements a typically fifteenth-century philological operation, consisting of the archaeological recovery of themes from classical Greek and Roman art. The interpretative approach also displays a pronounced plasticity inserted into a Brunelleschi-esque perspective, drawing inspiration from the research of Piero della Francesca, Paolo Uccello, and Mantegna. Marchionni, however, reworks the model, working primarily on the patina of antiquity, artfully producing the work's very degradation, which enhances its charm and value.
Elvio Marchionni is an artist born in Spello in 1954. His entire artistic research is grounded in the recovery of memories and emotions from the past. His paintings appear like fragments of torn frescoes, references to 15th-century Umbrian painting, of which Marchionni is a great connoisseur. His sculptures presuppose a study of Renaissance harmony and proportion. However, this process of recovering memory merges, in Marchionni, with a careful exploration of artistic language in keeping with a contemporary sensibility.
