Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject reflects the characteristics of the Vedutismo movement. Vedutismo is a genre born in the 18th century and developed primarily in Venice. Vedutismo painters aimed to represent a landscape objectively and scientifically, placing it as the protagonist of the work. There are essentially two types of vedute: the realistic one, taken exactly from reality, and the "capriccio," a fanciful view invented by the painter. Born in Bologna but trained in Venice, Emanuele Brugnoli draws directly from the lagoon city's vedutista tradition and the work of painters such as Canaletto and Bernardo Bellotto.
In all his watercolor works, Emanuele Brugnoli demonstrates an excellent pictorial technique. Throughout his work, he has consistently maintained the key characteristics of the vedutist aesthetic. This is primarily due to the solid spatial structure, based on rigorous perspective lines. Also crucial is the tonal unity of the entire work, which, through color alone, coherently conveys the atmospheric (sunny, clear) atmosphere of the entire scene. His brushstrokes are swift, delineating details with a few quick strokes, yet allowing the image to cohere into a unified whole.
Emanuele Brugnoli (Bologna, 1859 - Venice, 1944). After attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, he moved to Venice, where he worked as a painter and engraver. He painted many views of the lagoon city and was present in numerous Italian exhibitions and shows. From 1912, he taught painting and engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice.
