Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory aspect.
Even when he set aside his complex iconography, conceptually rooted in Symbolist and Surrealist movements, to devote himself to more traditional subjects, Emanuele Cappello consistently maintains his strongly post-Impressionist and Expressionist language. Synthesis is highly accentuated in his works, even though a drawn structure identifying the forms remains. But the absolute protagonist is the application of color, giving rise to dense, dynamic, and iridescent impastos, rich in light and sulfurous nuances. Emanuele Cappello's palette is distinguished by a vibrant polychrome of predominantly warm colors, an indelible trace of his Sicilian origins. Furthermore, space is erased, with a complete subversion of all rules of perspective.
Emanuele Cappello, also known by the pseudonym Kapel, was born in Vittoria in 1936 and works in Tuscany. He attended the Art Institute in Palermo and Florence, and later the “La Grande Chaumière” Academy in Paris. Thanks to his outstanding artistic talent, in 1951 he received a scholarship from Pope Pius XII to continue his art studies. In 1966, the Italian Government purchased one of his works for Palazzo Chigi. His paintings are found in private and public collections in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Egypt, Yemen, Kuwait, Israel, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Spain, Turkey, the United States, Japan, England, Argentina, Mexico, Greece, and Monaco. For his recognized artistic merit, he has been a member and academic of: the Tiberina Academy in Rome since 1964; the Academy of 500 for Arts, Letters, Sciences and Culture since 1964; the Free World International Academy since 1965; International Study and Exchange Center since 1965; Casa di Dante in Florence since 1966; Societé Libre de Poésie in Paris since 1966; Union of the Golden Legion in Rome since 1967; Florentine Union since 1967; Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts in Milan since 1970; Teatina Academy of Sciences in Pescara since 1973; and Medici Academy in Florence since 1984.
