Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting depicts an urban landscape, with a panoramic view showing a cluster of buildings, domes, and trees arranged on multiple perspective levels. The setting seems reminiscent of an Italian city, likely Rome, due to the dome dominating the composition and the recognizable architecture. The view is not realistic or descriptively accurate, but is constructed through a synthetic reading of the landscape, focusing more on the overall atmosphere than on architectural detail. Stylistically, the work is consistent with Cappello's painting style: a synthesis of figuration and expressive exploration. The forms are not precisely delineated, but rather suggested through color and the overlapping of masses. The tones are warm, and the application of color is free and visible, with rapid brushstrokes that lend movement to the scene. The use of tonal contrasts to define volumes is notable, while the primary focus remains on the relationship between light, color, and composition. Emanuele Cappello was born in Vittoria, in the province of Ragusa, in 1936. After training at the Art Institutes of Palermo and Florence, he continued his studies at the "La Grande Chaumière" Academy in Paris, a hub of mid-century European artistic culture. In 1951, he received a scholarship from Pope Pius XII for artistic merit, and in 1966, the Italian Government acquired one of his works for Palazzo Chigi. His painting is characterized by a continuous exploration of figuration and expressive synthesis, and is represented in important public and private collections in Europe, the Middle East, the United States, and Japan. He was also a member of numerous academies and cultural institutions, confirming his consolidated recognition within the international art scene.
