Description of the work
Description of the work
The work depicts a classic floral composition, a recurring theme in twentieth-century painting, but here approached with a unique vision. The bouquet of flowers, placed within a central vase, extends broadly across the space, suggesting a free and asymmetrical organization. Cappello doesn't depict the flowers with descriptive intent, but rather presents them as simplified, almost synthetic forms. It's the relationship between the presence of the shapes and the intensity of the colors that guides the composition. The background, constructed in layers, contributes to the definition of depth.
The artist doesn't aim for a detailed description of the subject, but works through synthesis, constructing the composition through fields of color and relationships between shapes. Influences from post-expressionist painting, particularly the Tuscan school, are evident. The brushstrokes are bold and visible, used to give body to the color and define the volumes. The overall effect is balanced, with a blend of warm tones and bolder contrasts that lend depth, strength, and rhythm to the scene.
Emanuele Cappello was born in Vittoria, in the province of Ragusa, in 1936. After training at the Art Institutes of Palermo and Florence, he continued his studies at the "La Grande Chaumière" Academy in Paris, a hub of mid-century European artistic culture. In 1951, he received a scholarship from Pope Pius XII for artistic merit, and in 1966, the Italian Government acquired one of his works for Palazzo Chigi. His painting is characterized by a continuous exploration of figuration and expressive synthesis, and is represented in important public and private collections in Europe, the Middle East, the United States, and Japan. He was also a member of numerous academies and cultural institutions, confirming his consolidated recognition within the international art scene.
