Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre first emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to attempt a naturalistic or photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also becomes a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory element. In this particular work, the hyperrealist artist Emanuele Dascanio draws on the tradition of the "Still Life," recontextualizing it in a highly interesting conceptual guise. Indeed, the fruits appear bagged, covered in plastic. While in a certain sense the artist intends to pay homage to Christo's packaging, the work seems to allude to reflections on the relationship between consumerism, nature, and the industrial production of fruit and vegetables.
The subject's depiction draws inspiration from hyperrealist currents. Hyperrealism aims for a completely objective representation of reality: the artist's desire is to reproduce what he sees without any interpretation. In this sense, the hyperrealist aesthetic also constitutes a paradox, often consciously sought by artists. Indeed, thanks also to the use of very aggressive techniques, inspired by the world of advertising, and the use of bright color palettes, a rendering of the naturalistic element is achieved so pure as to appear illusory, deliberately artificial. In this context, Emanuele Dascanio's excellent painting technique is highlighted. He is capable of a truly photographic reproduction of sensory data. And, in particular, in this work we can observe the exceptional virtuosity in reproducing the fruit within the plastic, whose opaque reflections he renders with absolute perfection. Meanwhile, the objects within appear slightly deformed.
Emanuele Dascanio was born in Garbagnate Milanese in 1983. He trained in the studio of Gianluca Corona, a student of Maestro Mario Donizetti, mastering the oil painting technique as it has been handed down since the Renaissance. He has participated in several top-level national and international competitions and exhibitions. He devotes considerable time to studying artistic techniques and continuously improving his expressive abilities. In 2018, Emanuele Dascanio became an Ibex Master and is considered one of the most accomplished artists in the world. His works are part of the prestigious Ibex Collection and are held in private collections worldwide.
