Description of the work
Description of the work
The book's cover features a beautiful bas-relief by Antonio Cocchioni. The volume features John Paul II's encyclical "Redemptor Hominis," of whom Antonio Cocchioni created a superb bas-relief portrait. The image of the pontiff is accompanied at the bottom by a "Creation of Adam," reaffirming the book's content. The reference to the creation of man is, in fact, an explicit reference to the centrality of Christianity in contemporary times, in a sort of rebirth in the light of new values.
Antonio Cocchioni's aesthetic draws on a classical conception of artistic creation, characterized by a naturalistic rendering of the subject, marked by a strong idealization. Cocchioni, in fact, turns his gaze to the formal principles of ancient and Renaissance art, which had reworked and embraced those principles. For this reason, his works are distinguished by their highly naturalistic depiction of the subject and an overall compositional harmony marked by a serene and calm idealization that also permeates the scene of the "Creation of Adam." In this portrait of John Paul II, Cocchioni chooses a frontal angle that allows us to appreciate the pope's physiognomic truth. Indeed, the execution retains the perfect naturalistic rendering that characterizes this sculptor's works, with an added touch of realism in the depiction of the concentrated expression. The sculptural surface is smooth and polished, reaffirming the classicist nature of Antonio Cocchioni's artistic style.
Antonio Cocchioni was a Roman sculptor, born in 1917 and died in Ancona in 1999. His artistic production, which stands out above all for its bas-relief portraits, is characterized by a highly classical spirit, combining the naturalistic rendering of his subjects with an idealizing aura of solemn harmony.
