Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the age
classical naturalistic rendering of human anatomy was one of the goals
main works of painters and sculptors of all times. The representation of the nude is the
maximum expression of this aspiration, transversal to all eras and
all stylistic currents. In fact, in addition to naturalistic interpretations,
typical of the Renaissance and of the various classicisms, which aim at a
truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude was
protagonist also within the new aesthetic concepts brought by the
historical avant-gardes, such as cubism, expressionism and
surrealism.
The work is an example of the many graphics and drawings that Emilio Greco dedicated
to the study and research on female forms but also the human figure in
general. Research that the artist directs towards volumes and movement. This
This particular work demonstrates how much Greco's classical education was
been fundamental in his career. The artist pursues an ideal of beauty
pure, harmonious, through the creation of a balanced volume, almost
geometric within the composition, but which comes to life thanks to a
softly shaped which softens its forms. We can appreciate how
the artist uses a mix between a thin, wavy linearism and an intricate
hatching to outline volumes and shadow areas. In this way
the image is essential but, at the same time, endowed with great strength
expressive and plastic connotation.
Emilio Greco was an artist from Catania born in 1913. He was mainly involved
in sculpture he was also a writer and illustrator. His research was directed
especially towards the female nude. His cycle of the Bathers is famous
female portraits. For a period he was a teacher at the Carrara Academy and
He achieved fame with the monument of Pinocchio and the Fairy made in
1956 for the town of Collodi.
